The 5 best exercises to counteract your bad desk posture

The 5 best exercises to counteract your badeanstalt desk postureThe 5 best exercises to counteract your bad desk postureFor most desk-job workers, sitting at a desk for hours at a time is unavoidable. And when this happens, its hard to maintain a perfect posture. Despite our best intentions, as the day goes on our shoulders round and our heads start to inch forward closer to our monitors. This bad desk posture can causeserious health problemsover time.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhen you chronically slouch at your desk, the muscles on the back of your neck and shoulders begin to lengthen and become underactive. Your chest muscles, on the other hand, become tight and shortened. These muscle imbalances can result in permanent muscle deformities over time, if not properly corrected. Luckily, some exercises can help you reverse these imbalances before its too late. These five ex ercises will make it easier for you to maintain good posture at your desk. For best results, its important that you do them regularly - daily, if possible.1. Chin TuckStepsabflug sitting or standing with your shoulders rolled back and down. While looking straight ahead, place two fingers on your chin, slightly tuck your chin and attempt to draw your head directly back without tilting it up or down. Hold for two to three seconds and return to the starting lokalitt. Repeat the exercise 10 times. Why its effectiveThis exercise helps reverse that forward-head posture. Its also effective at relieving neck pain and headaches.2. Shoulder RetractionStepsBegin by standing upright with your feet hip-width apart, shoulders down and back and a neutral head. Bend both elbows to a 90-degree angle, keeping your triceps glued to your sides and your forearms out in front of you. Begin to move your forearms to the back of your body until both hands are parallel to your sides, squeezing your shoulder blades together throughout the entire movement. Hold the end position for five to 10 seconds. Complete three to five repetitions. Why its effectiveThis exercise strengthens the muscles that are responsible for keeping your shoulder blades retracted, making it easier for you to avoid the urge to round your shoulders when youre seated at your desk.3. Doorway StretchStepsBegin by standing in a doorway with the right side of your body close to one of the door jambs. Assume a staggered stance, with your right foot in front of your left. Lift your right arm so that its parallel to the floor and bend your right elbow to a 90-degree angle so that the fingers of your right hand are pointing toward the ceiling. Maintain this position, placing your right hand and forearm on the door jamb. Slowly lean into your raised arm and push against the door jamb until you feel a gentle stretch in the chest and right shoulder - hold for 20 to 30 seconds. Repeat this exercise three times with each arm.Why its effectiveIt loosens the tight chest muscles that become shortened when you chronically slouch at your desk.4. SupermansStepsStart by laying on the floor in a prone position (on your stomach, facing the floor). Extend your arms straight out in front of you so that they are parallel to the ground. Lift your arms and legs off the ground as high as you can while still keeping your stomach and pelvis pressed into the floor. Hold this position for five to 10 seconds, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Return to the starting position and repeat three to five times. Why its effectiveAlthough this exercise is commonly known for its butt-toning abilities, its also great for combatting the rounded-shoulder effect that frequent sitting has on many of us desk job workers.5. T-Spine Mobility ExerciseStepsBegin on all fours, with your knees directly underneath your hips and you hands underneath your shoulders. Place one hand on the back of your head with your elbow pointing toward the flo or. Rotate your chest until your bent elbow points towards the ceiling. Lower back to the starting position and repeat the exercise eight times before switching arms. Pro tip Make koranvers that youre keeping your hips square and your lower back as still as possible throughout the entire movement. Why its effectiveA lack of mobility in the thoracic spine can cause your shoulders to slump forward due to inactive upper-back muscles. This exercise will help you regain mobility in your upper back, allowing you to stand upright and taking some of the weight off of your lower back.Sign up forDaily Fit by Swirled, our newsletter featuring a wellness tip of the day and must-read health news from around the web Youll be one step closer to living a healthy, balanced life. This article first appeared on Swirled. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Frank lins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

If you do this on your resume, there is a 79% chance you will not get hired

If you do this on your resume, there is a 79% chance you will not get hiredIf you do this on your resume, there is a 79% chance you will not get hiredLiteracy seems to be paying the most significant price for the progression of technology. As a Harvard study from a few years ago pointed out, its not necessarily that Americans are becoming worse spellers on some fundamental level, its more that the accessibility to technology, that does most of the grammatical heavy-lifting for us, has made us comfortable overlooking critical grammar and spelling errors.Whatever the cause behind the reported national decline in literacyis, our confidence remains as buoyant as ever. Recently,Dictionary.com reported that four in five Americans considered themselves to be good spellers even though the majority of the very saatkorn participants observedsaid they often noticed spelling mistakes from others.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreS-P-E-L-LA new study from our friends over at Signs.com corroborates this curious conviction and its implications in the workplace as well as in the boudoir. The studys participants were composed of 101 Baby Boomers, 168 Gen Xers, 619 Millennials, 108 Gen Zers, and four individuals selecting the other option. The average age of the respondents in the study was 33.Interestingly enough there wasnt a notable distinctionin spelling efficiency with participants that attended public school versus private school. Eighty-four percent of individuals that attended private school said they were happy with their education, and three-quarters of Americans that attended public school echoed this. In any case, most said that English wastheir best subject in school. Here are some of the other intriguing finds Sign.coms report across variousindustries and generations uncovered. Some things wrong hearThe study found that Americans tend to overestimate their abilitie s when it comes to spelling as well as grammar and reading comprehension and several other subjects.Eighty-six percent of women and men felt they were reading comprehension virtuosos. Seventy-eight percent of the 1,000 Americans involved in the survey described themselves as super-spellers, and more than 74% reported being proficient in grammar. The problem is that in America, more than 30 million adults currently have reading, writing and math skills that are more akin to that of a third grader. The American Journal Of Public Health reports, Low literacy is said to be connected to over $230 billion a year in health care costs because almost half of Americans cannot read well enough to comprehend health information, incurring higher costs. The self-assured respondents that participated in Sign.coms study were tasked with a spelling test following their charitable self-evaluations and the average score was about 75%. Fortunately, the irony didnt end there the da sagst du wass that stu mped Americans the most were misspell and hypocrisy. Nearly 43% of Millennials incorrectly spelled the word Millennial, even though on balance, this generation scored the highest compared to older generations. Is bad spelling costing you work?Sixty-five percent of respondents said that typos were absolutely unacceptable in their respective industries. Seventy-nine percent said they would not hire someone that frequently made grammar or spelling errors in their resumes. Of the professions analyzed, jobs in advertising, logistics, and government, proved to be the less forgiving of literacy mistakes. Conversely retail and consumer durable occupations cared the least about typos, with only 45% describing them as unacceptable. The vast majority of American women said they privilege intellect over beauty when looking for a partner, but a good portion of men expressed the contrary view. Amongst male respondents, the importance of these values was split almost evenly. Forty-three percent of m en valued looks over brains in women, and 56.4% felt the opposite way. For both genders studied, spelling, grammar, and math skills carried a lot of negative points when seeking a partner to date and even more so when marriage was added as a consideration. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

4 Steps to Becoming a Boomerang Employee

4 Steps to Becoming a Boomerang Employee4 Steps to Becoming a Boomerang EmployeeIf you have ever considered returning or boomeranging to your former employer, you are not alone. In a recent study, nearly 40 percent of those surveyed said theyd consider returning to their former company, according to the study from The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated and WorkplaceTrends.com. Among those surveyed, 15 percent said they already had boomeranged back to an old employer at some point. kronos.com/pr/boomerang-employees-and-the-organizations-they-once-left.aspx Boomerangs may be onto something. Theyre already accustomed to the ins and outs of the company culture, technology and leadership. And perhaps their goal for leaving to earn a higher salary or develop a new skill has been achieved, and it feels like time to revisit the old stomping grounds. Intrigued? Well, there are several ways you can immerse yourself in this trend. Market yourself appropriately and, better yet, stra tegically position your career moves, so that returning to your former employer is the natural next step. Heres how. 1. Leave on good terms. The adage never burn your bridges couldnt be more true. You should always resign on a positive note. Resist the temptation to text your resignation and always give at least two weeks notice. And write thank you notes to your former boss and colleagues. Besides the fact that you may need to reach out to them as references in the future, you never know when you may cross paths with your colleagues especially under the same roof again. 2. Strive for impeccable performance reviews. When I worked in recruiting, former employees who applied to my jobs were always highly considered. Regardless of the employer, the common denominator welches always to give significant weight to boomerangs and put them at the top of the virtual pile. Why was this consistently the case? For starters, ramp-up time for boomerangs is significantly shorter than with ne w hires. Theyre already familiar with the internal workings of the company, from the culture to the time sheet system. That said, I mucksmuschenstill always looked into their performance reviews from their time at the company and, more importantly, to find out why they left. Were they terminated for poor performance? Or was their department eliminated? If anyone had a needs improvement rating on their record, they were an immediate no. So, during performance reviews, and upon exiting a company, find out whats going to be on your permanent record. Granted, theres not much you can do to change a needs improvement rating after the fact, but its always good to be knowledgeable about where you stand and make sure that records are 100 percent accurate before you leave. 3. Stay in touch. Its always smart to maintain your professional relationships, and its especially important to reach out if youre contemplating returning to your former employer. While youre enjoying lunch or coffee wi th them, dive deeper. Ask about ways the companys culture, leadership and values have changed and what growth looks like. Is it a happy environment to work in? Are there opportunities to grow? Figure out what youre looking for in a new employer and ask specific questions to determine whether theyre aligned with your priorities. Keep your original reason for leaving in mind. If you previously felt that the companys core values werent aligned with your own, but now it seems like things have changed, then by all means consider pursuing them. At the same time, just because certain things have changed doesnt mean that everyone at the company will share your beliefs. For instance, if your former horrible boss still works in the department youd be joining, or if compensation hasnt changed, and you previously felt underpaid, it might be better to simply stay away. 4. Showcase your knowledge about the company. Its not only likely that old colleagues will forward along job opportunities to you as soon as they hear about them theres a good chance theyll send your application directly to the hiring manager. When recruiters call you for the initial interview, be prepared for an alteration to the ubiquitous question, Why should we hire you? And of course, Why do you want to work here? You need to be prepared to convince them why they should rehire you and, of course, why you truly want to work there again. Yes, being a boomerang certainly boosts your chances of being a front-runner for that job, but dont solely rely on it during the process. You still need to ace it. Demonstrate how knowledgeable you are about the company. Dont be a know-it-all, but remind them how youre already ahead of the curve without saying, You know, Im a boomerang. I should get first preference. Its a show-dont-tell scenario show them that youre well-versed on company happenings by mentioning nuggets of information you found on their social media feeds, for example. Make it seem like you havent missed a beat in the time youve been gone, and youll boomerang back into familiar territory in no time.

The #1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticity

The 1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticityThe 1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticityOf all the underlying reasons that drama creeps into our workplaces and ruins corporate culture, a lack of authenticity is the most serious. We know the drill Have a policy for everything, make employees sign acknowledgments for all those policies, draft a statement about your companys commitment to diversity and inclusion and post it on your company website. Defend every claim of unfairness with your standard statement that your company is committed to an environment free of harassment and that you are an equal opportunity employer. Im not necessarily saying any of these are bad, Im saying they are rote responses that send a clear message We are an average company who implements average solutions.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraAnd whats worse is a company th at says these things but means none of them.I liken a companys promise of a harassment-free workplace to a restaurant that promises diners poison-free meals. I suppose a restaurant wants to make sure that diners know they wont get food poisoning when they visit, but isnt a better marketing strategy to promise them an excellent dining experience?Similarly, promising a harassment-free workplace tells employees We promise to do the minimum or We promise to do what the law requires. A more effective approach is to promise a healthy and inclusive workplace culture. That necessarily means that the culture wont tolerate harassment, and it also means that employees will be respected, developed, and provided with opportunities to thrive.Heres a common scenarioCompany We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to sexual harassment.Employee My boss tells sexually suggestive jokes and makes sexually charged comments and at the last sales conference he invited me up to his hotel room. (Employ ees inner-dialogue This is hard to do, but I want this to stop, and Im going to believe the companys stated commitment to keep me safe.) Manager Well, was he drunk? (Managers inner-dialogue I have so much work to do, this is the last thing I want to deal with. And besides, this employee is complaining about a guy who brings a lot of money to the company.) Employee I dont know? (Employees inner-dialogue Is this person serious? What happened to zero tolerance?)Manager Were you drunk? (Inner-dialogue I mean, its a fair question.) Employee No. (Inner-dialogue Well, I guess I know where this is going . . .) Manager Okay, well look into it, but Im sure he was joking. (Inner- dialogue I better not find that any of this is true . . . I cant lose this guy.) Employee Um, okay. Thanks, I guess. (Inner-dialogue I should have listened to my coworker who told me to keep my mouth shut.)How do you create and maintain a culture that says what it means and means what it says? Try this three-step proc ess Define it. Live it. Color it in.Define it You cant live your values until youve defined what those values are. This involves more than putting a mission statement on your website. What does your company really stand for? Why do employees and leaders join and stay with your company? If your companys focus is on increasing revenue (for example, a start-up that will perish without showing profit quickly), then dont pretend to be a company that wants to retain employees for a lifetime. If you are a company whose passion is making the world a better place, say so and structure your culture to attract employees who buy into that philosophy. More than ever, culture matters to employees, often even more than compensation.Live it So now that youve found your companys true north, how do you make it real? First and foremost, walk the walk. Be radically authentic. All work on defining your culture will go to waste if your employees sense that it is simply lip service. If youve defined integ rity as a core company value, then act in all instances of ethical lapses. All of them. If you say you believe in and value diversity and inclusion, then be a champion for a comprehensively and creatively designed and deployed DI plan.Color it in Simply defining and living your values isnt quite enough. Be meticulous about linking your company culture to your companys purpose and passion. And do so in detail. Will you draft and distribute an employee handbook (yawn) or an inspirational guide that gives employees genuine guidelines about what to expect, and also tells them what is expected of them? Will you talk about your values during interviews, at performance meetings, during coaching sessions and even when an employee is exiting your company? If not, why not? Once youve made your company purpose clear, its time to yell that message from the rooftops every chance you get.Practicing profound authenticity is the first step on the path to a drama-free workplace.Excerpted with permis sion from the publisher, Wiley, fromThe Drama Free Workplace How You Can Prevent Unconscious Bias, Sexual Harassment, Ethics Lapses, and Inspire a Healthy Cultureby Patti Perez. Sometimes this is a result of household income needs sometimes its the need for outside stimuli and sometimes its just stumbled on because of a gap in the market. I spoke to a number of women who have refused to, or been unable to, return to the rat race after having children. Too many were feeling the strain of balancing corporate life with kids and didnt want to be the absent parent in their childs life. Others were coming to the end of maternity leave and struggling with the thought of going back to a work routine that didnt fit their new lifestyle. Some were even made redundant before or during their pregnancy and, finding the job hunt practically impossible as an expecting parent, were forced to find an alternative. The main theme from all their stories is tha t there is a better way to earn an income while still being a big part of yur childs life. And the internet is a big part of this.Speech pathologist to sleep guruSherene Alfreds is an accredited speech pathologist and mother of two, a son in kindergarten and a daughter in year 4. It wasnt until her husband suggested she turn her own soothing bedtime tales into CDs did she realise the possibility.I realised he really meant it when he quit his job to create the website, the CD cover art, and help get me started. Creating Dynamic Character Through Internal Conflict One of the easiest ways to make characters dynamic is for them to have conflicting ideas or for their internal world and their external world to be at odd s, which provides tension and conflict. Think about what a person says versus what they think and show the difference in your fiction. What do they choose to reveal about themselves? How do they craft their outer persona? Are they transparent in terms of how they are perceivedor are they secretive manipulative and complicit in hiding their interior lives and showing a false self? How much do they lie?And how do they justify their behavior? Are they capable of intimacy, and if so, what does that intimacy look like to them? How do they treat the people who they love? How do they express anger and happiness? How do they show weakness? The answers to these questions help you to paint a rounded character. Character Flaws Another way to show the complexity of a character is through their flaws. A flaw does not necessarily mean a giant scar on a characters face it is simply a blanket term for anything outside the stereotype. A simple example is a character who is a mother who feels inadequ ate, who is not a super mom, who doesnt always know the right thing to do or say as a parent. Often taking two or three (seemingly) disparate personality traits and putting them together can work to achieve this. You might write a number of personality traits on separate pieces of paper and pick up two or three randomly. Then write about a character who shows those traits. Personal Inspiration Another way to think about fictional charactersis to take a good look at yourself and those around you. List your likes and dislikes, your passions and your repulsions. Look at your hobbiesand habits. Be honest about the things that bother you. What is your biggest secret? What is your vice? You will probably quickly see that your answers do not fit into a stereotype. If it is too difficult a task to look at yourself this way, think of someone you know well and try to parse these aspects of their personality. Everyone is infinitely complex and full of stories (both good and bad). For your writing to express maximum realism, fictional characters should reflect this.Creating believable characters takes time and thought.

Highest-Paying Java Programming Jobs

Highest-Paying Java Programming JobsHighest-Paying Java Programming JobsJava programming skills are in high demand for both enterprise development and Android mobile development roles in markets across the United States, so finding skilled candidates can be a challenge for employers.Due to unterstellung dynamics, many qualified Java developers are able to find Java programming jobs in the areas where they prefer to live - and at desirable rates of pay.Heres a look at how location can impact thestarting compensation for Java programming jobs and overall IT hiring.Location and payThe Robert Half Technology Salary Guide lists the salary midpoint for a developer/programmer analyst at $103,000 per year. Keep in mind that the local economy and cost of living can affect compensation, as well as industry, level of experience and skill set.Use our Salary Calculator to adjust these salaries for local areas.Listed below are the five cities projected to pay the highest Java programmer salaries from this years Salary Guide, and what the salary midpoint is for programming jobs in these locations. Increase or decrease the national salary by the percentage for your city to adjust the salary range for a specific marketNew York City (40.5%) $144,715San Francisco (40%) $144,200San Jose (37%) $141,110Boston (34%) $138,020Washington, D.C. (33%) $136,990Dont forget that just because a specific area has a higher local variance number than other markets youre considering doesnt mean youll come out ahead living there. For example, while New York City and San Francisco have the highest local variance numbers, these markets are also very expensive places to live. Also, the city variances may not tell the full statewide story. For instance, while New York City has a variance of 40.5%, almost all the rest of the state of New York is below 100 with the exception of Long Island. In the end, overall quality of life comes down to a delicate balancing act between your potential salary and the lo cal cost of living.Location and IT demandIf youre actively looking for work, high salaries are meaningless without ample job openings. Robert Half Technology surveyed 2,400 chief information officers (CIOs). When asked about their plans for hiring in the second half of 2017, CIOs in the five cities below reported the highest anticipated job growth sparked by new businesses. Weve also included the local variance numbers and salary midpoints, adjusted by locationNew York City (40.5%) $144,715Dallas (10%) $113,300Salt Lake City (5%) $108,150Houston (7%) $110,210Los Angeles (31%) 134,930The bottom line If you are a Java programmer, there are probably well-paying Java programming jobs waiting for you, wherever you want to live. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

Fake It and 5 Other Ways to Conquer Self-Doubt

Fake It â€" and 5 Other Ways to Conquer Self-Doubt Fake It â€" and 5 Other Ways to Conquer Self-Doubt Article by Patti Johnson I recently spoke at a conference about starting change, about making ideas become reality â€" in other words, about acting on dreams. The crowd of young career women was energized and enthusiastic. Hallway conversations were animated and full of big plans. On the surface, the possibilities seemed endless as these womens  careers and lives were unfolding. But under the surface, the story was different. When I talked to them individually and in small groups, more than half of their questions had hidden elements of self-doubt. They had doubts about being the only female on the team or the youngest person in the room. They worried about  trying to influence coworkers who were old enough to be their parents and held very different views from their own. Some of the questions they asked included: - How did you handle these situations? - How can I be more assertive when I am still learning and I clearly dont have all of the answers? - How can you have influence when you are [the youngest, the least experienced, and/or different from everyone else]? As I listened, I thought back to my own experiences and remembered feeling the same way too many times to count. These accomplished, amazing young women were letting self-doubt star in their plays. While there isnt one simple answer when it comes to conquering self-doubt, here are the things I know can work: 1. Fake It Now, I believe in authenticity. However, if you take it so far as to reveal every fear or sign of self-doubt, you will undermine yourself. Displaying confidence matters. No matter how you may feel on a given day, believe that you are a professional with a contribution to make. You may be the youngest, the least experienced, or different from  others in the room. Carry on and believe that you are there for a reason. And the reason isnt  to get everyone elses approval â€" its to contribute. 2. Change Your Thoughts Change your thoughts and you change your world â€" its true. Thoughts control how you feel, and your feelings control your actions. Internalizing and acting on this simple concept is the most fundamental change you can make today. If you want to feel strong and confident, thoughts like Do I belong?, Do I know enough?, and What if I dont sound smart enough? must be left behind. Stay laser-focused on the contribution you want to make. If your first thought is always  I want to contribute, then you show up differently than you would if you were driven by  I hope they like me or  I hope I am good enough. 3. Dont Use Language That Undermines You There are words and phrases that unintentionally minimize and diminish you â€" and they have to go. Remove words like these from your vocabulary: - Just,  e.g., I just wanted to ask you about that report. -  Sorry, e.g., Sorry  to bother you, but -  Not sure,  e.g., Im  not sure  if this is a good idea, but Someone on my team had a habit of speaking indirectly. In a lengthy setup, she would offer options, reference others views, and then, finally, get to the punch line. Her points were unclear and, as a result, undervalued. So she worked to speak more directly, and it greatly impacted her influence. 4. Find the Triggers That Trip You Up Think about situations when you have lost your confidence. Was there a common trigger? It could be things like being interrupted, being rushed before a meeting, or making a suggestion that is ignored. What causes you to shut down or feel inadequate? If you know your triggers, you can de-personalize them and have a strategy for recovering quickly. 5. Stop Aiming for Perfection Perfection keeps you from jumping into the conversation, trying something new, and stepping out. So aim for excellence, but scrap perfection. A search for perfection will keep you one step behind where and what you should be, because (spoiler alert!) you will never get there. And then comes self-doubt. Again, focus on the contribution you want to make â€" not your own internal report card. 6. Know This: No One Can Make You Feel Inferior Without Your Consent. This quote from  Eleanor Roosevelt is one of my all-time favorites and essential for the times that we feel inadequate or full of self-doubt. Others will treat you as you expect to be treated. We make the decision to give our power away. And we often give it away to others we may not respect that much anyway. Dont do it. Self-doubt is complicated, a problem without an easy answer. You have to solve it for yourself. No one can do it for you. So take control of your head, get out of your own way, and believe that you deserve to be at the party. â€" A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com. How to fully commit to goals that terrify you

How to fully commit to goals that terrify you How to fully commit to goals that terrify you “Nothing can resist a human will that will stake its existence on a purpose.” - Benjamin Disraeli- - - There’s a shift that must happen within. Something clicks-in and your brain and biology can never go back.Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.”Ideas can only truly catch hold if they are embedded within a deeply emotional experience that reshapes how you view your identity and purpose in life. When an idea becomes your obsession and purpose - and it is highly personal to you - then you can take that idea and quickly turn it into a reality. You don’t need to be defined by the norms and expectations of those around you. You don’t even have to play the same game as everyone else. You’re living in your own world and creating at will, whatever it is you want to see.Jim Rohn said, “Sometimes all you need to open the door is just one more good idea.”You need an idea that shakes-you-up and stirs d eep imagination. An idea that moves, inspires, and motivates you.You need a splendid idea that actually embarrasses you, one in which you don’t want to share with others because you know they won’t understand.Gapingvoid Culture Wall- - - Are you embarrassed by your goals? If not, you’re losingIf what you’re pursuing right now isn’t so big that you’d be embarrassed to share it with most of the people in your life, I challenge you to take a step back and really think about it.Why would you play small? Why pursue something that is seemingly logical to achieve? Why pursue something that doesn’t require innovation and a redesign of the current system to have?Buckminster Fuller said, “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.”The traditional approach to life needs to be up-ended and replaced with something totally new. When you replace your mental and emotional system with new ideas and new experiences, you literally can’t go back. The old system in which you were operating becomes obsolete. It actually vanishes and can no longer be re-accessed.You can’t go back when you’ve had certain experiences and when certain ideas take hold. The remainder of this article will break-down the process of reaching this personal point of no return - where your mind get stretched and can’t go back. This is how you live your life on purpose. This is how you evolve by choice and how you go to the next level, over and over.- - - You reach your major go als and start getting bored“There are two tragedies in life: One is not getting your heart’s desire; The other is to get it.” - George Bernard ShawWhether you’re currently winning or losing in life - you will quickly adapt to your circumstances.Human beings are highly adaptive. We can get bored very easily without having new things to pursue. The brain needs novelty to thrive, otherwise it quickly becomes stale. A sharp mind can dull quickly. The worst thing you can do is try to keep things how they are. Growth requires offense - or what psychologists call an “approach-orientation” where you focus more on the rewards of a new future than the potential risks. The worst thing you could do is have what psychologists call an “avoid-orientation,” where you focus most of your energy and thought on maintaining your current position or protecting your current status. You must advance, otherwise you’re going backwards.- - - You detach yourself from your prior success and status“I can’t go back to yesterday - because I was a different person then.” - Lewis CarrollThe only way to get to the next level is by letting go of who you’ve been. The longer you hold on, the smaller your thinking will be.This is approach-oriented psychology. Don’t get stuck where you were. Be willing to banish the past - no matter how great - for a better future. The mind and brain seek expansion and growth far more than stability and certainty. We are programmed and designed to solve complex situations and turn chaos into system. If you’re not willing to embrace the chaos of rapid growth and change, then you’ll age physically and deteriorate mentally. Every time you step into growth, you’ll experience an increase in complexity and chaos. Growth is the process of taking something that was once complex and making it simple, systemized, and subconscious. This is how you slow down time. This is how you grow. You step into chaos and create simplicity and knowingne ss. You can get to the point where you can handle chaos that most people would never dream of - because you know you can deal with it, learn it, and own it.- - - You start seeking lots of information to clarify your new vision“Kids should be allowed to break stuff more often. That’s a consequence of exploration. Exploration is what you do when you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s what scientists do every day.” - Neil deGrasse TysonExploration and searching are key to discovering what is possible and what is out there. You don’t know what you don’t know. You must be exposed to new universes to realize it’s possible to expand far beyond the current sphere in which you’ve found yourself. How can you parlay what you’ve done and laterally-jump into a new world with new growth and bigger possibilities? In the book, Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, journalist Shane Snow explains that most of the United States Presidents spent less time in politics than the average congressman. Moreover, the best, and most popular Presidents, generally spent the least amount of time in politics. Rather than spending decades climbing the tedious ladder with glass ceilings, they simply jumped laterally from a different, non-political ladder. As Snow distills, “Lateral thinking doesn’t replace hard work; it eliminates unnecessary cycles.”- - - You start looking at new role models to learn from and surpass.“Wanna be a bodybuilder? Compare yourself to Arnold. Wanna be an actor? Compare yourself to DiCaprio. Wanna be a musician? Compare yourself to Rehman. Wanna be a dancer? Compare yourself to Michael Jackson. Wanna make money?compare yourself to Musk. Wanna be a writer? Compare yourself to Shakespeare. Wanna make the world a better place? Compare yourself to the Mother Teresa.” - DwijaAs you begin developing new perspectives and possibilities, use your pattern recognition to develop taste. What is working in this new sphere and what is not working? What is working extremely well? There’s a lot of talk about how comparing yourself to others is a bad thing. It’s not. Trying to be someone else, however, is a very bad thing. Mimicry can quickly become idol-worship.But being inspired by someone and learning from their mastery is not only a good thing, it’s essential to learning and growth. Why not fast-track your process by holding your own to the same standards as those in the top of the industry? Actually, study the best so much and understand why it works so you can quickly innovate and evolve beyond it.Don’t be an imitator. Be an innovator. In the book, The Lessons of History, Will and Ariel Durant explain that throughout history, most people lack the creativity and courage to innovate. They prefer to imitate what has worked, and thus never create anything original. This makes absolute sense. Innovation requires a deep learning and sense of context - and a willingness to pursue ideas beyond that context which might not work. As Sir Ken Robinson in his important TED Talk, “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.”Dan Sullivan explains that certain people are “Game Changers.” These people are industry transformers who don’t just work in a certain industry, they continually disrupt it.If you’re not changing the game, then you’re playing someone else’s game. To repeat Buckminster Fuller: “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.”When was the last time you innovated and disrupted an entire industry? When was the last time you innovated and disrupted your own life?- - - You begin to conceptualize your new ‘why’“Nothing can resist a human will that will stake its existence on a purpose.” - Benjamin DisraeliAs you begin to see benchmarks of what is possible in the form of various role-models from multiple domains, you begin to crystallize and clarify your personal WHY.You’ll be able to have concrete concepts to point to in explaining what matters to you, where you’re going, and how you’re going to do it.- - - You go through long and deep periods of contemplation“To discern what is truly essential we need space to think, time to look and listen, permission to play, wisdom to sleep, and the discipline to apply highly selective criteria to the choices we make.” - Greg McKeownAs you’re crystallizing your WHY - and future goals and plans - you’ll be spending lots of time by yourself. You’ll be out in your own personal desert really connecting and preparin g yourself for the next Everest you’re about to climb. You’ve already mentally and emotionally disconnected from your past outcomes and identity. You’ve already emotionally-connected to your new WHY and dreams. But you just need to settle it at the biological-level, where your body and brain are prepared and expect what’s about to happen next. You make micro-commitments to force yourself forward. “A forcing function is any task, activity or event that forces you to take action and produce a result.” - Dan Martell You then begin turning your vision into a reality as quickly as possible. You begin telling people what’s next. You begin making changes to your environment and relationships that reflect the old you and old vision.Your environment, language, behavior, and life begin to quickly reshape themselves to match the new reality you’ve spiritually and emotionally created.- - - You begin making investments in the new and bigger vision.“Invest in yourself. You can afford it. Trust me.” - Rashon CarrawayGapingvoid Culture WallYou create a point of no return and solidify the new vision through financial investment. There’s no looking back. There’s no going back. You couldn’t go back mentally if you wanted to. But now you’re positioning your life for the next big climb. You’ve just increased your emotional-commitment 10-fold by putting big pieces in place.According to former Shark Tank Shark, Kevin Harrington, “Exponential thinkers do not hire who they can afford. They hire w ho can get the job done.”The question is, how big are you willing to play?Eben Pagan has a concept he calls “Inevitability Thinking,” which he defines as “Thinking and acting as if what you are doing is a forgone conclusion because you set up the conditions for it to happen.” Are you willing to set up conditions that make success inevitable? Are you ready to get hyper approach-oriented, where you focus on rewards over risks? - - - You have a new end-point that excites and inspires you“There are only three requirements for success. First, decide exactly what it is you want in life. Second, determine the price that you are going to have to pay to get the things you want. And third, and this is most important, resolve to pay that price.” - H.L. Hunt, billionaireThe focus on risks over rewards isn’t just a fun idea that entrepreneurs throw around. It’s actually the basis of one of the most studied theories of motivation in psychology, known as Expectancy Theory.According to the theory, three things must be in place for a person to have extreme and uncommon levels of motivation: You must believe the reward (the ‘WHY’) of a particular goal is important, meaningful, and compelling. You must believe that you know how (clear strategies/plans/people) to achieve your goal. You must believe that you can execute the plans, strategies, and pivoting involved in achieving the goal. The rewards you seek must be deeply motivating and personally fulfilling. They have to mean something to you on a cosmic and existential level. They have to connect with your deepest identity and belief system about the purpose of your existence. You must want it so badly that you have what psychologists call “pull motivation,” which is where you cannot stop pursuing what you’re after. The philosopher Rumi says it best: “What you seek is seeking you.”You cannot compete with people who have this level of purpose. Willpower cannot compete with WHY-power. Don’t even try.- - - You begin surrounding yourself with people way beyond where you currently are“Don’t join an easy crowd; you won’t grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform are high.” - Jim RohnYou begin doing work that matches the future vision you seek to create. It’s at a different level than has been seen before. Quickly, you learn to surround yourself with people who are operating at qu antum levels above what you’ve been conditioned. You quickly adapt to their systems of thought and emotion. Your new normal has fundamentally changed, as has the fiber of your being. Your new environment demands that you continue playing at the level you seek.Life continually becomes more and more of a game and less of a grind. The rules are increasingly tilted in your favor because you are designing them.- - - You take the leap and never look back“There is a point at which everything becomes simple and there is no longer any question of choice, because all you have staked will be lost if you look back. Life’s point of no return.” - Dag HammarskjoldGapingvoid Culture WallHave you taken the leap?Have you crossed your point of no return? Is your mind stretched by new experiences and new ideas?Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. 7 reasons to change jobs, even if you dont want to

7 reasons to change jobs, even if you don't want to 7 reasons to change jobs, even if you don't want to Statistics have long suggested that working professionals will have  up to seven careers  in their lifetime. However, this claim should be taken with a grain of salt - there’s not much substantial research backing that figure, and it becomes less and less relevant in our current job-hopping work climate.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The reality, according to several career experts, is not to anticipate a lifetime of seven long-term careers. It’s to plan to change your job regularly every few years, even if you like what you do and feel comfortable.Change is difficult, but the benefits pay off in ways you might never imagined possible, both professionally and personally. If you’re still on the fence about making a career switch, here are the experts’ best reasons why you should give it some thought. Here are seven reasons to change jobs, even if you don’t want to. You’re coasting - and it’s becoming a problemWhen we find comfort in anything, be it a job, relationship, or academia, there tends to be a period of time where individuals use that moment to coast.Avery Roth, a career change coach, has seen many working professionals find their comfort zone and stay in it. She said the longer professionals coast, the more they have to lose.“Coasting keeps you playing small and avoiding the fulfillment of your potential,” Roth told Business Insider. “While that may not seem immediately threatening, there will come a time when comfort with your job turns into boredom.”Roth warns that the longer you stay put, the more energy is required to spur you into action in pursuit of self-growth. Her advice is simple: Act now by changing careers to avoid pain later.Damian Birkel, founder of job-searching organization  Professionals in Transition, echoed Roth’s sentiments about coasting leading to boredom. He also noted that your coasting may not b e going unnoticed. Birkel said your boss and coworkers may already know what is happening simply by observation. You’re actually losing money staying in the same jobStaying with a company for more than two years is detrimental to your salary and worth, Samantha Spica, a communications manager for the online careers site  Fairygodboss, said.”You start with a base salary and your annual raise is based off of a percentage of that number,” Spica told Business Insider. “There’s a limit to how high your manager can increase your salary.”Spica said that by switching jobs, you can ask for a higher starting salary. And Birkel said that your new job should pay substantially more than your current salary. The advantage that those in the process of changing jobs have is that they are able to negotiate from a place of strength. If the salary doesn’t work out, professionals may decline the offer and keep looking while retaining their existing role.2019 is the best time to change jobsI f you’re looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it is already here in 2019.Marc Cenedella, CEO of the careers site Ladders, said that 2019 has brought the strongest hiring economy in history.“Companies are strapped for talent,” Cenedella said. “They are willing to consider people who are outside of the box. Job-seeking candidates are looking at a time when companies will consider you for roles they normally wouldn’t.”Don’t feel an urgent need for change? Look for a new job anywayChristian Eilers, a career expert at online resume builder  Zety, believes the best time to change jobs is not when you feel an urgent need for a change.Often when one feels pressured to find a new job, Eilers said, they will be more likely to accept mediocre offers and lower their requirements to get out of an existing position.“Many candidates sleep through this moment,” Eilers said. “They stop advancing in their positions. Eventually, they find themselves in a place whe re they urgently need a new job.”Rather than accept a role less than your worth, Eilers urges professionals to switch to roles that challenge them. This is, ultimately, an investment in your future.“People who quickly learn new skills and gain experience from various places and situations are more easily adapted to the professions of the future,” Eilers said. “Settling down for a longer time without challenges and stimulation makes you stop learning and aiming for more.”You may be secretly ‘gratitude shaming’ yourselfAccording to career coach  Lisa Lewis, “gratitude shaming” is when you beat yourself up about not appreciating what you already have. It also minimizes your deep-seated desire for more. You may have an internal monologue that begs you to be happy where you are and what you have, even at the cost of wanting more.“When you weaponize gratitude against yourself, it sends your brain the message that your ambition, hunger for growth, and desire to contribu te on a bigger scale isn’t valid,” Lewis told Business Insider.Rather than gratitude shame, Lewis advises understanding which of your four categories of core workplace needs that are not being fulfilled. This includes asking yourself: Does this role use my portfolio of strengths? Does it align with my areas of interest? Does the culture of the organization match my personality? Does this role enable the lifestyle I want? “When one of the four needs isn’t being met, it’s a great moment to explore what other jobs are out there,” Lewis said. “Your gut will tell you if you’re in a season where you’re craving a bigger challenge and change. Don’t ignore that feeling.”This is your chance to pivot into becoming a thought leaderAre there certain professionals you admire and want to be like one day? That day may never come if you stagnate in the same job. Alissa Carpenter, owner of career and leadership development company  Everything’s Not OK and That’s OK, believes you should start trying to seek out the thought leaders you admire.“It will be easier to get face time with someone you admire if you’re both attending the same networking event or company function,” Carpenter said. “You may even have an opportunity for a skip-level meeting or coffee chat for a one-on-one conversation.”It’s time to do what makes you happyFor over six years, life purpose and career coach  Gracie Mi ller  has helped people change jobs even if they weren’t sure they were ready for it. Miller finds that her clients do somewhat like their jobs, but feel like something is missing. They often find they don’t use a lot of their skills, are no longer interested in the work, and wish they could help people and find deeper fulfillment. What these clients come to terms with is the realization that they wish they had found careers that paid for their bills and lit them up inside sooner. Miller discovers that it’s not always about wanting to change jobs for the sake of changing jobs. It’s the uncertainty that something better exists or that it does exist but you may not get it.“It’s worth the risk to go for long-term happiness,” Miller said. “You have to act on the fact that deep down you know you could be more fulfilled.”The trick, Miller said, is to do some self-discovery and research. Rather than look at the same terms in your current role, seek out fields of interest t o find careers that might be a better fit. The happiness will ultimately go further than impacting your own sense of self.“You will be happier for it, and your family, friends, and coworkers will be happier to be around you,” she said. This article first appeared on Business Insider.    You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Retail Health Is Growing Fast and With It the Need for Clinicians

Retail Health Is Growing Fast and With It the Need for Clinicians Retail Health Is Growing Fast and With It the Need for Clinicians Retail Health Is Growing Fast and With It the Need for Clinicians Rossheim Healthcare recruitersare you ready to step up and fill your retail healthcare clients voracious need for talent? Retail is one of the fastest growing sectors of healthcare providers: to date there are approximately 2,800 U.S. retail health clinics while urgent care centers have ballooned to an $18 billion industry. The retail trend has prompted the need for a variety of healthcare workers, particularly clinicians. At first glance, it may not seem difficult to source clinicians for retail clinics or urgent care centers. After all, theyre usually listed on provider web sites and in licensure directories. The real challenge? Persuading these prospects that non-traditional healthcare settingsand the specific employers who operate in themrepresent good career opportunities. This unique challenge prompts a need for strategy. To help your staffing team devise its own approach to recruit retail health workers, weve gathered some helpful talking points for your future conversations with in-demand candidates who may be contemplating a move into retail healthcare. For some demographics, retail health clinics are very attractive With its flex staffing model and many part-time options, the retail health clinic setting lends itself to the new generation of nurse practitioners and physician assistants, says Travis Singleton, executive vice president at clinical recruiter Merritt Hawkins. The retail clinic job is what so many millennials want, says Singleton. The job and the compensation are simple and well-defined. Providers in these settings do just ten things really well. Retail clinics can be attractive to clinicians who desire flexible work optionssay those with small children, or medical professionals who have returned to school for further training and want to work nights and weekends. If all of this fits the candidate, youre golden, Singleton says. Still, vying with hospitals for the services of qualified clinicians can be challenging. Hospitals have recruiting machines, with their relationships with nursing and medical schools, says Brenda Doherty, a partner at search firm Buffkin/Baker. Retail clinics must compete for the same pool of clinicians. When the need is to fill a role like chief nursing officer, its critical that retail clinics offer a well-rounded compensation package. Independent primary care groups and hospitals are getting creative with signing bonuses and loan forgiveness, says Singleton. Retail healthcare has to match and sometimes top the offers of traditional care settings. Another angle to keep in mind: retail health offers clinicians who have advanced degrees and management skills a variety of opportunities for advancement that they wouldnt find in a conventional group practice. They could be front and center in developing new and different ways to deliver care, have multi-site, multi-state responsibility and put their signature on things, says Doherty. Whats the appeal of urgent care to physicians and APPs? Urgent care centers can appeal to physicians for some of the same reasons that retail health clinics are attractive to advanced practice providers: flexible and humane working hours, a predictable milieu, manageable scope of practice and competitive compensation. Regular daytime hours, even if they include weekends and holidays, are a key attraction of urgent care centers, says Tom Davis, MD, principal of Tom Davis Consulting. For example, at CityMD, a chain of more than 100 urgent care centers in New York, New Jersey and greater Seattle, clinics are open 8 to 15 hours a day, but not overnight or late on weekend evenings. CityMD often hires physicians from hospital emergency departments, says David Diamond, chief human resource officer. The ER setting is very different from urgent care, says Diamond. Our urgent care centers have a clean, fresh look. By contrast, emergency departments, with their mandate to treat everyone, can be overcrowded and stressful for clinicians. Some urgent care centers take additional measures to improve the work environment for clinicians. Unlike ERs, we have scribes who do electronic medical records entry, saving physicians hours of computer work each shift, says Diamond. CityMDs scribes are often premed graduates who are entering medical school, or medical graduates who have yet to begin their residencies. The emergency department isnt the only sourcing channel for urgent care. These are also excellent starter jobs for nurse practitioners and physician assistants right out of school, says Dr. Davis. The controlled environment of urgent care can also be appealing to the ever-growing cohort of experienced physicians who feel worn down by the stresses of private clinical practice. Urgent care roles also serve as step-down jobs for burned out clinicians who are looking for a path beyond medicine, says Dr. Davis. An even better sweetener may be to give doctors a stake in the business. With physician shortages growing more severe in many regions, I expect offers of equity interest to become far more common, says Dr. Davis. Its a benefit that non-profit providers dont offer. The convenience of retail healthcare has made it a welcome option for consumers, a trend that will likely sustain the demand for clinicians. With the right talking points and relevant benefits, your staffing team can make a strong case for them to join its ranks.

6 Ways to Be Smarter in Your Job Search

6 Ways to Be Smarter in Your Job Search 6 Ways to Be Smarter in Your Job Search Where is the first place you go to look for a job? If you haven’t searched for a job in awhile, you may not be investing your time appropriately. According to the "Top Sources of Hire 2015" report by talent management software provider SilkRoad, the top sources of hires may surprise you. This study will shows where companies have found new hires so you can restructure where you are investing your time and effort. Using data from nearly 300,000 hires, SilkRoad analyzed applicant tracking data extracted from the SilkRoad Recruiting ATS. Companies range from those with fewer than 100 employees to large firms. The study analyzed the success of internal sources of hire, such as company career sites, employee referrals and internal recruiters. It also analyzed? the success of external sources of hire, such as job boards, recruiting agencies and job fairs. The overall top six sources of hire were employee referrals, job search engines, current employees, job boards, recruiters and company career sites or websites. In order to improve the odds of you landing a job, diversify your search across these top six sources. The questions should help you recalibrate how you invest your time. And, of course, don't overlooked the fact that you first need to meet the as many of the job requirements as possible.? Where can you find employees who can refer you? Even before you begin reaching out to your network to announce you are looking (either overtly or covertly) for a new job, it’s important you first identify companies for whom you would like to work. If you don’t know any one inside those companies, ask people in your network to introduce you. Using LinkedIn is invaluable for uncovering this information. What’s a job-search engine? ?Job-search engines are defined by SilkRoad as “aggregators that give job seekers access to potentially millions of jobs from thousands of sources across the Web.” The two most popular job-search engines are Indeed and SimplyHired. Using these sites will save you time and most likely provide more opportunities. Do you want a promotion? The good news is that companies are still interested in promoting from within. Your next job could be right under your nose, so be sure you are polling your colleagues to see what opportunities are coming up. Research jobs inside your company just as you would outside. Conduct due diligence by fully exploring why the position is available and what the scope of the job is. Also speak with people within the department to learn about the leadership style and culture within that group. Which job boards are worth your time? Job boards aren’t dead yet. According to SilkRoad data, these five big-name boards were best at converting applicants into new hires: CareerBuilder, LinkedIn, Craigslist, Monster and Glassdoor. But don’t forget specialty job boards. These niche sites may be run by professional associations or geared toward a specific categories, such as nonprofit or green jobs. Craigslist is also a top contender. It placed in the top five external sources of hire in the study. Should you befriend recruiters? Third-party recruiters and recruiting agencies can be worth your time â€" if you understand how to work with them. Be specific about the types of roles you are interested in and your salary requirements. Remember, recruiters don’t work for you; they work for the company with a job to fill. Some jobs are only filled through recruiters, so it's just one more option for you to explore. Have you checked the company’s career site? Not all companies will post opportunities to job boards, and aggregators don’t typically pick up the postings from company sites. It’s important to visit company career sites regularly to keep up with news and openings. Bonus for soon-to-be graduates: Interviewing on college campus has increased 230 percent in a year's time, according to the study. While that hasn’t translated into triple-digit hiring of new graduates, it does show a level of interest in potentially recruiting new college graduates. Make sure you are connected with your career center and prepared for interviews. Hannah Morgan writes and speaks on career topics and job search trends on her blog Career Sherpa. The Art of Managing Creative People

The Art of Managing Creative People The Art of Managing Creative People Creatives' unconventional minds make them capable of accomplishing greatness and solving problems in ways others may not have considered. But managing creative people and the projects they're tasked with can be a challenge. When managing creative people, keep in mind that a happy team is not only more productive, but also experiences lower turnover. This means you retain all the wisdom that forms its greatest asset: your creative team's intellectual capital. Leading: It begins with building the best creative team To be an exceptional leader, you must begin by hiring good people. Know the skills needed to get the job done and then seek creatives with the right experience, expertise and personality. Then mentor them. This establishes good habits and allows them to grow to a point where they no longer need strong management direction. On the other hand, having to manage a difficult person can cause friction on your team and ultimately derail timelines or entire projects. Avoid this situation by hiring thoughtfully and ensuring you get the right creative for the job. Once creative teams are in place, listen to each individual's pain points. Remaining attuned to your employees' needs and concerns can help you avoid unnecessary turnover. Cultivate an ongoing relationship with regular one-on-one meetings, and then keep the dialogue going on a daily basis with five- to 10-minute chats, whether about work or not. Managing creative projects: 3 Ways to drive creative ideas Define. During project kick-off meetings, a strong leader should begin by helping to define the problem and give key creative suggestions on how to approach said problem. Some creatives on your team will only need the barest of pushes while others might need more clear-cut suggestions. Either way, allow your team to brainstorm new ideas. If you only weigh in with specific direction close to the deadline, you risk wasting the team's time and effort. Get the ball rolling with your suggestions and let your team take it from there. Check in. On an average day, a creative leader can expect to jump back and forth on multiple projects. Frequent check-ins are integral to ensure things are moving smoothly and on schedule. By briefly touching base, projects are more likely to progress without stress or sudden shifts in direction. Be deadline driven. Once goals and processes have been defined, it's time to get to work and finish on time, despite needing approvals from clients, managers and other stakeholders. This is where the sanctity of the deadline is crucial. A team's attitude toward hitting its deadlines is not just key to making sure individual deliverables are completed on time, but also ensures the whole process doesn't fall apart. Managing creative people and projects in a nutshell In a nutshell, an effective creative leader is one who repeatedly finishes projects by the deadline while retaining the team members who have built up the core competencies that make those projects successful. This is where hiring and training good people really pays off; you can trust them without much intervention. If I had to distill my creative management philosophy down to one main principle, it would be putting the team's needs first. If you look after them, they will look after you. In the creative world, that means providing feedback promptly and taking the time to listen to any concerns, even if you have less time for your own work. Time saved early on makes a huge difference when it comes to your creative team's stress levels. Based in San Francisco, Rick Byrne formerly headed up creative for client-based advertising at CBS Interactive. Rick's team specialized in quick-turnaround advertising and design projects, which meant he had to assess work and give creative direction fast. Targeted Cover Letter

Targeted Cover Letter Targeted Cover Letter Ever wondered what exactly will make your cover letter and resume stand out when hundreds of resumes are being read by the hiring managers. It is interesting that how the recruiters are able to select a few from that hundred. It may seem impossible at first to get selected out of all those applicants, but there are ways to make you more memorable to them. Writing a targeted cover letter is definitely one of them. What To Include It is obviously easier to write a general cover letter than to write a targeted cover letter for a specific job. However if you do not invest your time here, there is no use of writing a strong resume. Yours wont be read as they do not have that much time to read what everyone wrote. What you need to do is match your qualifications to the job. This is the first and foremost thing you got to do. Review the job posting and identify the skills and qualifications they are asking for. Include them in your cover letter and portray how they are relevant for the job. Although this takes a lot of time and effort, it is an essential step to get noticed. Then view sample cover letters that made the cut to get an insight on what to write. Make sure you include all the qualities they are looking for. Discard all the unnecessary information and details. This way the employers can easily spot the qualifications they are searching for and decide whether you are needed or not.

A Day in the Life of a Police Detective

A Day in the Life of a Police Detective A Day in the Life of a Police Detective A lot of people who chose law enforcement as a career do so with the goal of becoming a detective or criminal investigator, and with good reason. Theres a certain satisfaction that comes from solving a complex case, much like putting together a difficult puzzle. Whether youre considering a career as an investigator or just curious about the job, youll want to know what a day in the life of a ?detective is like.?? Time to Go to Work Its Monday morning and your alarm pulls you from your sleep, which you didnt get a lot of last night. Because you work in the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), you get to work day shift with weekends off, which is great. This past weekend, though, you were the detective on call, and it was a busy one. Youre holding three new cases before the work week has even started. You ease out of bed, shower, shave and put on a shirt and tie. You cant decide if you miss wearing a uniform; on the one hand, youll always be a patrol officer at heart. On the other, and especially when its 95 degrees out with 80% humidity, youre thankful youre not working traffic or walking a beat in a dark wool outfit like your police officer buddies in patrol have to. You grab a travel mug of coffee, strap on your sidearm, and head to the office in your unmarked car. At first, you were excited about getting an unmarked car, until you realized that instead of the sleek new Dodge Charger you were expecting you were issued a 5-year-old low-end import to avoid conspicuity. CID, you were told, tries to avoid standard patrol car models so that theyre not as easily pegged as cop cars. Just Another Day at the Office When you get to the office and check your voicemail, you have 5 new messages, all from the family of the victim from the murder scene you worked Saturday night. Theyre understandably hurt, shocked and desperate for answers, and theyre calling with what they believe are more leads and evidence for you to look into. You return the calls and take down the information, which turns out to be promising. You assure them youre going to do everything you can to get answers, and you give them your mobile number so they can get in touch with you more easily. Its a small gesture and an even smaller comfort, but it brings a little more relief to the family and lets them know you really do care about their plight. After you get off the phone, you look through your case files and plan your day. Youve got 5 witnesses you need to interview, as well as the primary suspect from Saturdays murder scene. He lawyered up and has declined to answer questions to date, but his attorney reached out to you and said hes ready to talk. You set up the interview for late afternoon to give you time to talk to the witnesses and get as much extra information as you can to help you look for holes in the suspects story. The Detectives Waiting Game You spend the rest of the day making notes in your file, reviewing photos and contacting the crime scene unit to follow up on an older case. Youre hoping for some breakthroughs from either the DNA analysts or the fingerprint examiners or, better yet, both. You dont hold out a lot of hope because you know that - despite how TV shows portray CSI cases - it usually takes months, not hours, to get any kind of actionable evidence analysis back from the lab. Interviews, Interviews and More Interviews With no new progress from the evidence techs, you leave the office, grab a quick lunch, and make your way to meet your witnesses. You take recorded interviews with each of them. Most of the information you get confirms what you already knew from the evidence, but a couple of new pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. Progress. A couple of the statements contradict each other, which is a frustrating but common occurrence when dealing with different people who have different perspectives; witnesses minds often try to make sense of what they saw after the fact. The challenge is to separate the facts from the speculation.  A challenge to be sure, but nothing you havent dealt with a hundred times before. After your last witness interview, you pull into a vacant parking lot to make some notes and go over your facts before you meet with your suspect. You develop a line of questions and devise a game plan and then make your way to the suspects attorneys office for the interview. Your suspects answers are short and somewhat evasive, and its clear hes been coached. He offers an alibi, but youve got some witnesses who contradict that. Youre not ready to play that card just yet, though. You can tell hes lying, but you want to get more proof to back it up before you call him on it. When the interview is over, you play nice with the suspect and the lawyer and assure him youre exhausting all leads. Playing by the Rules With the new information you gathered, youve got some good leads and ideas of where to look for some key evidence. You head back to the office and draw up a search warrant so you can collect the evidence you expect to find. You send a draft to the district attorneys office for review. Since its not time-sensitive, you know you wont get a thumbs up or thumbs down until at least tomorrow. It Doesnt End at the End of the Day Its been a long day, coming off of a long weekend. As quitting time rolls around, you head out to your car and make the short drive home. When you get home, you pine for a shower and a cold beer to wash away the day. The shower, you can do. The beer is out because youre still on call. After a few hours of reading and watching TV, youre ready to turn in for the night. You rest your head on your pillow and hope for sleep to come. Sometimes, when you close your eyes at night, you see the faces of the victims whose deaths youve investigated. Sleep doesnt always come easily, but fortunately, it does tonight. A Detective Never Sleeps Youre not sure how long youve been asleep when the ringing telephone wrenches you awake. A glance at the clock tells you its 2:30 AM. The fog of sleep slowly lifts as you answer. Its dispatch. Good morning Detective, the dispatcher says. Weve got a signal 7 for you. Are you ready to copy? You grab the pad and pen you keep by the bed and start to take notes. Its going to be another long day.
