How Im a Renaissance Soul In Disguise - When I Grow Up Create All Things With Love, Always by Autumn Grey Designs. If youve been around these parts for more than, oh, a minute or two and/or have met me in person and spoke to me for more than, oh, a minute or two, then you know Im a huge advocate for us Renaissance Souls. Renaissance Souls are people who have lots of different interests (or passions!) and are usually seen as flaky or ADD or unfocused. But were not! Were creative, talented, and smart its just that society hasnt embraced us since the, um, Renaissanceso we always think theres something wrong with us. The Best Thing Women Can Do to Bust Through the Glass Ceiling This is the fifth in a series of six posts on salary negotiation published in partnership with PayScale.com. The latest Census data shows that women earn 78 cents for every dollar earned by our male counterparts. Youâd think weâd be livid. But in fact, while many of us are angry about this inequity in a general sense, several studies have shown that women are not all that upset about being underpaid on an individual basis. The research shows that women report the same levels of satisfaction with pay as their better-paid male colleagues, even when controlled for occupation and position in the food chain. Academics call this (frankly depressing) phenomenon âthe paradox of the contented female worker.â Those in the ivory tower have been attempting to explain this since social psychologist Faye Crosby coined the term some 40 years ago. But one recent study of Texas attorneys published in the Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal offers a plausibleâ"and interestingâ"explanation. Survey participants tended to base satisfaction with their salaries on the salaries of those people who were similar and proximate, says the studyâs author H. Kristl Davison, an assistant professor of management at the University of Mississippi. âSo essentially what happens,â she says, âis that women choose other women who are also lower paid as references and then end up with a lower sense of entitlement to more money.â In other words, we are undervaluing our work because other women are undervaluing their work. And so the vicious underpayment cycle continues⦠So how do you break that cycle, at least where your own lovely pocketbook is concerned? The clearest implication of the study is this: When setting your expectation for pay for a job, donât base your desired number on anecdotal evidence from your female peers. Instead, start by gathering data from sites like Payscale to find out the average pay for the field, position, and location, regardless of gender. Butâ"since womenâs lower pay will be figured into these averagesâ"also ask higher-level men in your field for their input. âAsking male mentors can be very advantageous,â says Davison, âbecause it offers the perspective on what males are paid and because males talk about pay more than women do.â You could say something like, âBob, Iâm going for this job as associate marketing director at a Fortune 500 company and theyâre asking me for my salary requirements. Iâm not sure what to say for that size of a company and wondered if you had any thoughts?â (While mentioning a figure can help anchor the conversation in actual negotiations, avoid doing so here, since what you want is the other personâs uninfluenced opinion.) And then when the interviewer asks for your salary expectation, you can say, âItâs my understanding from my research that jobs of this level pay in the neighborhood of $96,500,â or âI consulted my former boss Bob Smith, whoâs now a V.P. at your competitor Quadroodle, and he told me the going rate is $96,500.â (Note: Using a specific the number can make you sound more authoritativeâ"so avoid rounding off too much.) In a world where women all too often punished for being too assertive in salary negotiations, framing your argument around benchmark numbers and using a high-level ally to bolster your case can help you walk away with more money and your likeability in tact. Itâs important for job seekers to stay on that nice list. Unfortunately, not all candidates have learned this lesson. 4 Tips For Staying On The 'Nice' List Several years ago, I worked for an IT consulting firm. Candidates interviewing at the headquarters office were quickly greeted by a receptionist soon after they arrived. The receptionist was one of the nicest people at the company and had great customer service skills. However, there was more than one occasion when a candidate was downright rude to her for no reason. The employerâs values and corporate culture really emphasized treating all employees with respect, so this kind of behavior was not acceptable. Furthermore, most of the employerâs work was client-facing, so we needed to hire people who were not only technically qualified, but could also act appropriately in front of a customer. If you were rude to the receptionist, you often werenât offered the job. You know what they say about never getting a second chance at making a first impression, so walk in the door to the prospective employer ready to charm everyone you encounter. You may be surprised how much pull the receptionist has in hiring decisions. You also canât assume that the first person youâll meet isnât the hiring manager. Here are some other tips to help you improve your niceness quotient: 1. Donât be cocky. Thereâs a fine line between being confident and being an arrogant jerk. Err on the side of cautiously assertive in your abilities. 2. Smile and show interest in your interviewer. Although you may be nervous for the interview, fake it until you make it. No one wants to work with someone who is a cold fish, so smile and show interest in what the interviewer is saying. This helps you come across as warm and friendly. 3. Be gracious. At the conclusion of the interview, thank the interviewers for their time. For extra credit points, consider sending a follow-up email or handwritten note to the interviewer after you get home. 4. That said, just 53% of women who review their company on Fairygodboss say that they are treated fairly, and 57% would recommend their company to another women. Sixty percent of our users say that their CEO supports gender diversity. Our mission is to get all those numbers to be higher, so wed love to find a way to translate all this momentum for International Womens Day into real improvement for women in the workplace every day. Here are five ways that companies can do just that1. Do a compensation audit.Despite increased awareness of the gender pay gemeinsame agrarpolitik, wage discrepancies persist within most companies. Employers who arent sure of how to fix this should take a hint from Salesforce, which conducted a compensation auditin 2015 to determine how to close the gap within its workforce. Acknowledge that men and women have different workplace experiences.Fairygodboss research shows that men and women look for jobs differently and have distinct reasons for searching. While 36% of men leave their job for a higher salary, 47% of women leave their jobs due to changes in their personal life or because some aspect their current punkt just isnt working work-life balance tends to be paramount to their job satisfaction. Employers that are aware of womens specific needs and concerns will be most effective in attracting and retaining top talent.5. Invest in and support your womens ERG.If leveraged effectively, employee resource groups (ERGs) for women can be crucial tools to help get more women into management positions by encouraging and perhaps formalizing mentorship and sponsorship, by engaging executives and male allies, and to help enhance initiatives or parental leave benefits. Finally, companies need to continue to make these conversations and initiatives central to their mission. By helping to increase awareness through discourse and then implementing concrete plans to bring their goals to fruition employers can do their part to support women at work every day of the year.
